Wheelchair sports is a wonderful example of humanism

An ABC report dated April 3, 2023, highlights an issue plaguing disabled sports: the prevalence of athletes misrepresenting their abilities not only in Australia but worldwide. This report sheds light on the ease with which individuals can exaggerate their disabilities without facing any consequences.

This revelation may not come as a surprise to those who have long recognized that any form of humanism can be susceptible to manipulation. This susceptibility arises because humanism is often driven by strong emotions, which can blind individuals to reason and the obvious realities at hand. Even in the realm of humanism, robust oversight is essential.

I once faced heated criticism from feminists when I pointed out a harsh truth. I emphasized that no matter how noble and humanistic principles may be, they can be hijacked by self-interested individuals to advance their own agendas. Some feminists, as well as many men, particularly those in positions of power, found it expedient to align themselves with the feminist movement to further their personal ambitions. They did so in ways unrelated to the genuine empowerment of women.

The feminist movement was significantly driven by media businesses that profited from it. This is not to undermine the legitimate need for improved conditions and opportunities for women, as they unquestionably deserved better treatment. However, women were not the sole beneficiaries; many others profited from the cause to improve women's circumstances. An intriguing question arises regarding why these opportunistic individuals were not held accountable.

Throughout history, those who point out the abuses of humanism and the risks of going too far in a particular direction often face backlash and accusations from advocates of social justice. Malice in the name of humanism becomes tolerable when directed at those who provide objective commentary and expose themselves. Such individuals are subjected to harsh criticism and derogatory labels.

This environment makes it perilous to highlight abuses, leading many, especially those in positions of authority, to turn a blind eye and remain silent. Thus, it was genuinely surprising, at least to me, to witness the ABC criticize such a high-profile and humanistic cause as disabled sports. Suggesting that not all disabled athletes are entirely honest would be a hazardous endeavor, particularly coming from conservative sources.

We need more instances like this, as it is essential to acknowledge that humanism can be seriously exploited. Other critical issues, including refugee intakes, environmental conservation, and climate change, also have their share of cheaters, abusers, and opportunists. Failure to address these issues only encourages further exploitation and contributes to cynicism and dissent.
